I love a ballcarrier that can hold on to the ball...., and a defender that can tackle.
BLOCK--TACKLE-- WIN

Gimme a bunch of kids that will bust their tail every play and everday in practice and we'll win a bunch of games. Country boys are the best. Places like Albany, Goldthwaite, Mason, Roscoe, Harper just to name a few. You don't have to have the best athletes on the field all the time, size and speed help but I'll take dairy farmer boys and ranch kids anyday. You can build a program on hard work with those type of kids and not be one of those coaches that say "well wait til next year we've got a good class coming through". Sure some classes are better than others but if you run a program right you don't have to wait on classes. Look at the places like Goldthwaite, Windthorst, Albany, or any others that have had the same or close to the same head coach/system in for a long period of time and you will have consistency. I'm still just a pup only been coaching 9 years but in my short time span the places that always win are the places that have consistency, the kids grow up knowing what to expect. It always helps to have parents that expect and demand alot from their kids (not just winning ball games but working hard no matter what they are doing). I'll take hay haulers over video gamers any day of the week. That's just my two cents.

Been coaching 8-10 year olds in youth football for about a month now. So I can probably answer pretty much any questions you guys might have. Don't feel bad, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

I think its great for ya'll to be involved like ya'll are, but please know what you are doing and try and coordinate the fundementals and plays that you are teaching with the local coaching staff. Once bad habits are ingrained in the minds of 8-10 year olds, it becomes very difficult to break them of it! Just my two cents.

What are fundamentals? lol We just send the kids on the field and tell them "good luck".
Actually I spent a few years behind the scenes watching and listening, taking examples from the coaches I thought had a good plan for teaching these kids. Knowing the game of football, and teaching it to kids so that they understand and enjoy is two totally different things. |

Quote: Just skimmed "Tackling 101" and did not see the word "explode", or to visualize making your helmet being one foot past the person you are tackling when you do explode through that person. It also mentioned to aim at the hips. I always focused on the "belly button" and exploded toward the Adam's apple, insuring that my head would be up! But otherwise looked okay. |

They are supposed to not be breathing before you try mouth-to-mouth! It's a good thing that I don't have to go back to college. I'd never make it to class!
